Spindle bearings are single row angular contact ball bearings which support thrust loads in one direction. and are often used in machine tool spindles. Needle roller bearings are roller bearings with rolling elements that are rather thin in relation to their length, the so-called needle rollers. Despite their small cross-sectional height, they have a high load carrying capacity, which is why needle roller bearings are used in automotive engineering, for example the release bearing in passenger cars between the clutch and the manual transmission. Other areas of application would be packaging machines or printing presses, for example. For very special applications, there are bearings made of stainless steel or ceramics, the so-called hybrid bearings, in which the bearing rings are made of steel, but the rolling elements are made of ceramics. Here, the surface coating plays an important role in increasing the resistance of rolling bearings to wear, environmental influences, and the passage of current, thereby generally extending the service life of needle roller bearings.
